History: The Babydoll Sheep originally came from the Sussex Downs in England to the United States in about 1803. They are Southdown sheep. The Olde English Babydoll Southdown Registry started in 1991, after spending many years of research tracing down the original miniature sheep and their bloodlines were established. Their height is 24 inches or less from their withers ( shoulder to the ground), not including the thickness of the wool. They were originally sought after because of their mild meat & their wool. Their wool is short stapled, but with a micron count of 19 to 22 & has more barbs per inch than any other wool. It is perfect for blending with other fine wools or fiber. In our current time, people want them for small homestead farms and because they are miniature and rare. People like their short compact size and height. They have a very cute round face and appear to be smiling at you. Photographers love them too! They are very docile and make great pets, not to mention they are the cutest little lawn mower you have ever seen! They are used to keep pastures, lots and orchards nicely trimmed and produce a natural organic fertilizer of course! You can't get any better than that! The babydolls only breed once a year in early to late fall and start lambing in early spring to early summer. Their gestation is about 5 months. The do have to be sheared every year. The Olde English Babydoll Registry web site is a great source of information. I encourage you to visit it if you are considering a babydoll sheep. We have been raising the Babydolls since 1999. I warn you, the lambs are contagious!!!!!!! BAAAAAAAAA . Click here to view a photo gallery of our sheep and lambs
